Quick Answer
Add the room's length and width in feet; the sum in inches is the chandelier diameter. A 12 by 14 foot room takes a 26 inch fixture. Hang it 30 to 34 inches above a dining table, or with 7 feet of floor clearance in an open room.
| Room size | Diameter | Hanging height |
|---|---|---|
| 10ft x 10ft | 20in | 7ft clearance, or 30in above a table |
| 12ft x 12ft | 24in | 7ft clearance |
| 12ft x 16ft | 28in | 7ft to 7ft 6in clearance |
| 14ft x 18ft | 32in | 7ft 6in clearance |
| Two-storey entry | 30in to 40in | Bottom at or above the second floor line |
For a room, add length and width in feet and read the answer as inches of diameter. For a table, take half to two thirds of the table's width, and never exceed the table width itself. For height, allow 2.5 to 3 inches of fixture height per foot of ceiling: a nine foot ceiling suits a 22 to 27 inch tall fixture.
Over a dining table, hang the fixture 30 to 34 inches above the tabletop in an eight foot room, adding three inches per additional foot of ceiling. In a passage or open room, keep the bottom at least 7 feet from the floor. Over a two-storey entry, the lowest point should sit at or above the second floor level and be visible from outside if there is a window.
Undersizing is nearly universal: fixtures look far larger in a showroom than in a finished room, and buyers correct downward. Trust the formula. The second mistake is hanging too high — a fixture pushed up towards the ceiling stops relating to the table and lights the plaster instead of the food.
The third is centring on the room instead of the table, which shows immediately once the chairs are in. Fix the fixture position to the table before the ceiling box is cut, or use a swag hook and a longer cord to correct an existing box.
A dining chandelier should be dimmable without exception; the same fixture needs to serve homework at six and dinner at nine. Use 2700K bulbs or warmer, and check the fixture's total lumen output against the room — 20 lumens per square foot for ambient light, supplemented by sconces or lamps rather than by a brighter chandelier.
Material changes perceived size. An alabaster or opal-glass fixture reads solid and therefore larger; an open brass frame reads lighter and can be sized up a few inches without dominating. In low ceilings, a flush mount or semi-flush is the honest answer.
