Nightstand Dimensions & Height Guide

Quick Answer

A nightstand should be level with the mattress top or up to 2 inches above it — usually 24 to 28 inches tall — and roughly 18 to 24 inches wide, with 2 to 3 inches of gap between it and the bed frame.

Getting the Height Right

Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress, not to the top of the bed frame or headboard. That is the number the nightstand must match, within a couple of inches. Reaching down for a glass of water in the dark is the test; anything more than three inches below the mattress fails it.

Low platform beds change the answer completely. A 20 inch mattress top wants an 18 to 22 inch table, which usually means a stool, a small drum table or a purpose-built low piece rather than a conventional nightstand.

Width, Depth and Clearance

Width should be proportional to the bed: 20 to 24 inches beside a queen, 24 to 30 beside a king. Depth of 16 to 20 inches gives space for a lamp, a book and a glass without crowding. Leave 2 to 3 inches between the nightstand and the bed frame so bedding does not catch, and 24 to 30 inches of walkway on the outer side.

Matched pairs read calmer, but two different tables of the same height work well when the room is asymmetric. What does not work is a single nightstand on one side of a bed with clear wall on the other — the eye reads it as unfinished.

Lamps and Storage

A bedside lamp should put the bottom of the shade at roughly seated eye level in bed — about 24 to 27 inches above the mattress — so light falls on the page rather than in your eyes. That usually means a lamp of 24 to 27 inches total height on a 26 inch table. Wall sconces free the surface entirely and belong at about 30 to 36 inches above the mattress.

Choose drawers if the surface tends to accumulate, open shelves if it does not. A stone or glass top will survive water rings that timber will not, which matters more beside a bed than anywhere else in the house.
