Milan Showroom Dining Room

Our milan showroom dining edit is a contemporary italian scheme built for furniture treated as sculpture and priced accordingly. The palette runs to arabescato marble, chrome, smoked glass and burnt orange mohair, and the discipline of it is what makes it work: four materials, repeated, rather than nine used once each.

Start with the largest surface and let it set the temperature of the room. In a dining room that usually means the floor and the seating — everything hung, placed or switched on afterwards is a response to those two decisions. Once the base is warm, metals can be warm too; once it is cool, keep the metals cool and let a single textile carry the warmth instead.

The pieces below are the ones we would specify first. They are chosen for silhouette and finish rather than trend, which is the only reliable way to keep a contemporary italian room from dating: forms that were correct before the look had a name, in materials that improve as they age. Buy the largest piece properly and the smaller ones become easy.

Layer light last, and layer it three ways — an overhead source for the room, a standing source beside the seating, and a low source at table height for the end of the evening. Put everything on dimmers. A dining room with one bright ceiling fixture will never feel like this scheme regardless of what furniture is in it.

Finally, leave something unresolved. The rooms that read as collected rather than delivered all have one piece that does not match, one surface left bare, one wall waiting. arabescato marble will still be there next year; the rest can arrive slowly.
