Sofa Dimensions: Standard Sizes by Type

Quick Answer

A three-seat sofa is typically 84 inches long, 36 to 40 inches deep and 30 to 34 inches tall, with a seat height of 17 to 19 inches. Leave 30 inches of walkway behind it and 14 to 18 inches to the coffee table in front.

Depth, Seat Height and Comfort

Overall depth tells you how much floor the sofa consumes; seat depth tells you how it feels. A 22 inch seat depth suits upright sitting and smaller frames; 24 to 26 inches suits lounging and taller people. Seat height of 17 to 19 inches is the comfortable range — below 16 inches, standing up becomes work.

Back height changes the room as much as the seat changes comfort. A low back under 30 inches keeps sightlines open in an open-plan space; a high back over 34 inches encloses a seating group and suits formal rooms with tall ceilings.

Fitting a Sofa to the Room

As a rule, the sofa should occupy no more than two thirds of the wall it faces or sits against. Measure the wall, subtract, and only then consider length. Then check the route in: doorway width, corridor turns, stair pinch points and lift dimensions. A great many sofas are returned for geometry rather than comfort.

Clearances that matter: 30 inches of walkway behind the seating, 14 to 18 inches to the coffee table, 18 inches between a sofa and an adjacent chair, and 84 to 96 inches between facing sofas for a conversation that does not require raised voices.

Sectionals and Small Rooms

Sectionals seat more people per square foot than separate pieces, but they fix the arrangement permanently and often block the best walkway in a small room. A sofa plus two chairs is more flexible at similar capacity and lets the room be rearranged as it is used.

In small rooms, choose exposed legs and a lighter frame: visible floor under a sofa makes the room read larger, while a skirted or plinth base reads as a solid block. Keep the depth to 36 inches or less and put the volume into cushions instead.
