Occasional furniture does the structural work of a room. A coffee table sets the centre of gravity for the seating; a console draws a line along the entry; a credenza gives the dining room its horizon. Because these pieces are seen from every angle, we choose them on silhouette and material first, then on function.

Stone is the material we return to most. Carrara marble is bright, graphic and cool; travertine is warm, porous and forgiving; limestone sits between the two. All three age visibly, which is the point — a honed stone surface earns its patina rather than losing value to it. Seal stone annually and blot spills rather than wiping them.

Proportion rules for occasional furniture are simple. A coffee table should measure roughly two thirds the length of the sofa, sit within one to two inches of seat height, and leave 16 to 18 inches of walking room. Side tables should land level with the arm of the chair they serve. Consoles look best at 30 to 34 inches high with at least six inches of wall clear at each end.

Mixing materials is where a room becomes personal. Pair a stone top with a warm metal — antique brass or bronze rather than chrome — and let one wood tone repeat at least twice in the room. Glass earns its place in small spaces because it keeps sightlines open; use it where a solid mass would crowd the floor plan.
